Rebel Girls editorial department is seeking an energetic and creative editor or associate editor who is ready to dive in and complete a few books already underway and begin to develop and edit new titles for girls aged 7 to 12.

The editor will work on our upcoming mini books, in addition to gift books and kits, imaginative nonfiction, prescriptive nonfiction, middle grade fiction, and ancillary printed products for the Rebel Girls franchise.

The editor must be able to work independently to edit books and help develop new projects, and must have some knowledge about the latest trends in children’s publishing. An ideal candidate will have some experience editing illustrated nonfiction and/or branded books.

This position will report to the head of book development. 


  • Shepherd book projects through the publishing process, from conceptualization, through writing, editing, design, copy editing, fact-checking, proofreading, and coordinating the shipping of final files to pre-production.
  • Create detailed outlines/TOCs of book projects.
  • Edit manuscripts, and review sketches/final art, layouts, and proofs.
  • Write copy for book covers, title information sheets, and seasonal catalogs.
  • Write and copyedit text for book projects and other company initiatives.
  • Participate in brainstorms and book development meetings.
  • Prepare book briefs and make offers to authors, agents, and packagers.
  • Maintain database of suggested subjects; research and suggest potential subjects and content for RG book projects.


  • 3+ years editorial experience in children’s publishing or book packaging.
  • Experience working on children’s nonfiction and/or middle grade fiction.
  • Strong copy editing skills and familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Ability to mark up text in Acrobat and input text changes in InDesign.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong time management skills and organization skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented environment; willingness to accept feedback.
  • Passion for female empowerment.
